Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disease is where a body's immune system acts against 'self' antigens. B and T cells recognise some tissues as 'non-self', and therefore cause tissue destruction. Many of these diseases have a genetic component; some people are more susceptible to this disease whereas others have a strong resistance. Autoimmune diseases can typically be temporarily treated with immune suppressing drugs. The problem with these drugs is that your immune system is weakened, allowing your body to become more susceptible to infection. AIDS has a similar effect to these drugs. So that's why autoimmune diseases are difficult to cure and Multiple Sclerosis is one of them.
